EcoDesign Directive for EuP

The EcoDesign directive for EuP (Energy using Products) 2005/32/EC was adopted in July 2005. Member States are supposed to convert it into national law by 11th August 2007. It will create a framework for integrating various environmental aspects into the design of energy using products, such as- energy efficiency, hazardous substances, water consumption and noise emissions.

The EU - initially selected fourteen target sectors of products that have a significant environmental impact or an annual trade volume exceeding 200,000 units per year. These sectors were defined last year; - related preparatory studies are currently being conducted and results are available.  Over and above this, five new sectors have now been listed and a study is being conducted to identify at least 20 other categories. The fourteen first lots are shown below. These studies work according the seven stage process of the MEEuP methodology to identify the major improvement factors in whole life cycle.

Who is affected by the EuP:
In general every company which manufactures or trades Electrical and Electronic equipment is affected.

2. Water heaters
3. Personal computers and monitors
4. Imaging equipment: copiers, faxes, printers, scanners, multifunctional devices
5. Consumer electronics: televisions
6. Standby and off-mode losses
7. Battery chargers and external power supplies
8. Office lighting
9. Street lighting
10. Residential room conditioning appliances
11. Electric motors (1-150 kW)
12. Commercial refrigerators and freezers
13. Domestic refrigerators and freezers
14. Domestic dishwashers and washing machines
