Guidelines for PSE mark

About the PSE Mark

The PSE mark (Product Safety Electric Appliance and Materials) is designed to signify that a product complies with the law according to a new set of standards for electric devices.

Advantages of the PSE Mark

  • The PSE Mark is a mandatory mark for Japan according to the Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law (DENAN). Click here for more information.
  • The DENAN law is meant to essentially prohibit the sale of all electric appliances and materials that do not comply with the new standards. Punishment for selling such prohibited items is penal servitude of one year or less, or penalty of one million Japanese yen or less. Or both.

Products where the PSE Mark is granted

  • Most electrical appliances for home in Japan
  • Most electrical appliances for business in Japan

Products regulated under the DENAN law are categorized as Specified Products (SPs): the ones that require certificates by a Conformity Assessment Body, and Non-Specified Products (NPSs): that require mandatory compliance but not necessarily via certificates from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) Conformity Assessment Body. Find the list here.

Conditions for granting the PSE Mark

In order to obtain the required PSE mark for devices, it is necessary to report them as Product service cases and prepare for examination.
