Wet Chemical Analysis and
XRF Screening
Since July 2006 the EU directive EU 2002/95/EC for the “Restriction of Hazardous Substances” (RoHS) in electrical and electronic products excludes all non-compliant products from the market. Similar regulations will be introduced in other areas of the world, including China and the US, within a short period of time.

All new products and production processes need to be monitored for the concentration of restricted substances, namely hexavalent Cr, Hg, Pb, Cd and Polybrominated Diphenylethers and Biphenylethers (PBDE and PBE). Ensuring that no limit is exceeded is a huge challenge for every manufacturer of electrical and electronic equipment.

Ways to prove RoHS Compliance

XRF Screening (Preliminary Method)
Reliable, accurate and fast screening for the RoHS restricted elements in all different kinds of materials is a daunting task. In practice X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis has proven itself as the ideal analytical tool for fulfilling the main requirements of the industry. The minimal sample preparation and the direct measurement of solid samples distinguish XRF from any other elemental analysis technique. With the shortest time-to-result and highest cost effectiveness, XRF screening provides indications as to whether and where hazardous substances may exist in the product according to RoHS. It is especially suited, for instance, to gaining a quick overview on end-product.

Wet Chemical Analysis (Verification Method)
RoHS testing
is carried out using an initial screening test by XRF, then if high levels of restricted substances are found, further tests may be carried out using wet chemical analysis in order to produce the conclusive results with a high degree of accuracy.

Comprehensive Testing Approach
From preliminary quantitative screening to full quantitative analysis, SGS provides all clients with accurate, precise results that report the total levels of RoHS elements and compounds and whether their product fully meet RoHS requirements.
